Deputy’s Heroic Act. Saving His Wife From a Crash, After 23 Days in Coma

Life often takes unexpected turns, leaving us unprepared for what lies ahead. One day, a young couple found themselves on the roadside, unaware of the impending danger speeding towards them.

A courageous off-duty deputy, 31-year-old Raymond Surber, was driving his 2017 Chevrolet Silverado on August 1 when he collided with the young couple, ACSO Reserve Deputies Lucas and his wife Nicole Shoffner, who were attempting to repair a dirt bike by the side of the road.

The collision occurred around 11:17 p.m., leaving both husband and wife injured, but Lucas bore the brunt of the impact. In a selfless act of heroism, Lucas managed to push his wife to safety, saving her life. However, his own fate took a different, less fortunate turn.

Matt Fagiana, a member of the Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, shared with the public the courageous act of Lucas, emphasizing how it had saved Nicole’s life. He asked everyone to keep Lucas in their prayers and expressed their unwavering support for the couple.

Nicole was immediately rushed to Fort Sanders for a head CT and x-rays, while Lucas, suffering severe head injuries, was admitted to the Transplant Intensive Care Unit at the UT Medical Center. Lucas’s condition was so critical that he had to be placed in a medically induced coma and kept sedated.

Nicole, though injured, stood firmly by her husband’s side, supporting him in every possible way. Their friends initiated a GoFundMe page to help cover the mounting medical expenses, setting a goal of $100,000. In a heartwarming display of generosity, the page managed to raise over $93,000.

Nicole expressed her gratitude to everyone who donated, prayed, or offered support for the young couple’s recovery. After enduring 23 days in a coma, Lucas finally awoke. He was under close medical observation, and the prospects for his recovery seemed promising. It was decided that he would be transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta to continue his journey to full recovery.

Nicole’s Instagram stories conveyed the positive progress in Lucas’s recovery, including a significant milestone: Lucas took 200 steps at the rehabilitation center, a remarkable feat that filled their lives with hope and joy.

Lucas’s brave act of pushing his wife out of harm’s way, even at great personal cost, is a testament to true love and selflessness. His story is an inspiration to all, demonstrating the extraordinary lengths one person can go to save the life of their loved one.
